This very badly worn JOG (Joint Operation Graphic) printed by the Defense Mapping Agency (as it was known at the time) in the USA and by the MOD’s Directorate of Military Survey in the UK, is a much more useful scale (1:250,000) and designed for terrestrial navigation. Before Ant and H discovered that there were better Soviet maps, this would have been a sensible choice. Their GPS unit would have been set to the MGRS standard (based on UTM) printed on this map. The route highlighted in green looks to me like the final stages of their route.
